It was a mere two weeks after the convention.
"Would you be interested in doing some Star Wars work?" from writer/game designer Peter Schweighofer.
WOULD I?!? REALLY?!?!
Right out of nowhere into Star Wars! WOW! It was exciting because we (as fans) were coming off of the Timothy Zahn trilogy of novels (the TRUE Episodes 7, 8, 9) and Star Wars was getting big again. This was also right before Lucas announced he was going to do the Prequel Trilogy.
I only did a couple pieces to help finish the first book for the Star Wars Adventure Journal #1 (which featured original material from Zahn). I did the work around this time of year and it was published in February '94! It can happen that fast sometimes!
I was there for the beginnings of what would become the "Star Wars Extended Universe," though we didn't know it then. West End Games was at the forefront of it all.
It was so exciting to see my name in print, and on Star Wars, and from 1994 to 1997 I learned a LOT about the printing process and how to adjust my art for reproduction. It was a great learning experience! Everything was done by hand on paper and we had zip-a-tone film if you wanted to add some shading. You had to figure out how to be creative working in pen and ink and using the materials you had at the time to do cool effects.
While I had a lot going for me in terms of layout and composition, my execution of the art was still raw and lacking in spots when it came to technique. It was a great way to learn as you were doing it.
I'm THRILLED that West End Games gave me a chance and I would do work for them from 1994-1997 as the comics industry was crumbling apart. The role-playing game companies seemed to be doing okay amid the chaos and it was a safe haven to be in.
