My very FIRST JOB that I did for DC COMICS!

ZOINKS! The FIRST JOB that I did for DC Comics was the cover art for Scooby-Doo Super Scarefest #1 back in 2002. It was a one-shot, double-sized comic that reprinted some of the comics at that time so I had to draw Scooby and Shaggy with the monsters that were taken from the stories inside. It's a busy cover, but I still like it a lot!

The original art was drawn on 11" x 17" copy paper and then inked on official DC Comics art board (via my light table). The art board also sported the classic DC Comics "Bullet" Logo in the top left corner. Prestige, indeed! I still have a piece of that art board that is unused! They mailed me several boards to draw on at that time for the assignment and I stored one away to keep as I held it in high regard.

The text for "Mystery Inc. Scrapbook" I typed out on my computer at the time and printed it out to paste to the actual art board! We've come a long way!

I had been drawing Scooby since 1999, but when work was slowing down in late 2001 (after Golden Books shut down and the 9/11 events that affecting the economy), I contacted DC Comics and offered my services and this assignment was my first job with them. Back then the cover rate money was fantastic! You even got paid for doing the thumbnail concepts!

I had sold the original art over 20 years ago and found out it was resold on Heritage Auctions in 2024.

Always feels good to find out your original artwork is valuable! I have the physical comic framed hanging on my studio wall.
