Eventually, that small pile of sketches became a big pile (from all the licenses I worked on) and I got the idea to place them into small flip-through portfolios and take them to conventions with me to sell to fans. Some would also be given away for charity events, giveaways, or I would throw in one or two if you bought original comic page art from me as a "Thank You."
All drawn on cheap letterhead paper and inked with a Pitt Brush Marker and a couple Micron Pens.

I only drew this cover (Cartoon Cartoons #20) and didn't color it. Don't know who did the guide or made the notes on it. When DC Comics mailed me back my original cover art they threw this in the box with it. I kept it all this time though the original art was sold many years ago.
Ye olden times, indeed! Back when you mailed the physical final art to the publisher to scan! A year later, in 2004, you could just scan and upload the art to them directly via FTP.
Here's another Ed, Edd, n Eddy comic story for you to read!
One of my favorites that I drew and it's titled "Where is My Ed?" Never drew a giant clam before, but it was a lot of fun. The original script for the story was titled "Where's my Ed?" which I think works better, but one of those little editorial tweaks made at the end during final approvals before it was sent off to printer.
This story is also the last story I drew for the Eds as Cartoon Network Block Party was ending as a series. I liked the short story format for these characters as they're a quick in-and-out commitment for the artist and a nice change of pace from something else you were working on at the same time.
Towards the end of the CNBP series, one of my contributions to the Eds comics was creating a separate credits box which would be on the title page of each story. The upside down art of the Ed's poking their heads into the panel was modeled and based on the animated show's opening title sequence!
Eagle-eyed readers will also note that the "END" at the end of the story was the same "END" for most of my Cartoon Network comics I did. I added it to the art to show it was the actual end to the story. When you held the original artwork in your hands, it was purely visual with no word balloons and you could get the impression that there might be more to the story.
Thought I'd post a cover I drew of the Eds trying to stay cool during a hot summer! I'm ready to build me a slip n' slide to cool off!
Here's another Ed, Edd n Eddy comic I did that was a lot of fun. It was titled "An Ed For An Ed." It was a busy script with a lot going on even though it all took place in Ed's basement bedroom. Page 2, panel 5 took some time in planning out as I had to draw multiple Edd's cleaning Ed's room which was a single background plate. As with any Eds script, there's a ton of "squash and stretch" exaggeration going on at all times.
Drawing the Eds took some time but I normally could do a page/a page and a half a day. Inking the art was much faster as you had to match the loose "boiling line" look that the cartoons had and I could ink it all in a day if I had to. Everything, including panel borders, were done by hand. No rulers needed and that made doing the Eds comics a lot of fun! Usually I would ink half the story and then scan those pages in, digital clean them if needed, and then format them in the template. I liked breaking up the job into segments to keep things fresh. Nothing is more boring than a full day of constant scanning and file prepping.

I sold the original artwork many years ago but have scans of it here. Overall, I still really love the original final art and layout for the story. The inks were super clean and the storytelling was clear and readable. There was a lot to get into the panels but it all works really well. The word balloons, however, killed some parts of the art though in a lot of spots. One such spot was the word balloon covering up the broken wood leg on the ground on Page 4, Panel 3. You see them all reacting to what happened but you don't see the actual broken wood leg until the next panel. So, I'm posting the original scans of the final inked artwork I did so you can see it in its glory. Enjoy! You can click on the pages and see the art in a bigger format!
Don't know if any of my followers knew this, but I just found out about it a week ago! Apparently, about ten years ago, IDW got the rights to the Cartoon Network comic archives (from DC Comics/Cartoon Network) and they produced a massive 300-page omnibus trade paperback in 2015!
The Cartoon Network All-Star Omnibus trade paperback was released in May 2015.
There are FOUR comics in it that I drew: 1 Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and 3 Ed, Edd n Eddy stories... on nice paper stock too!
Needless to say, they don't tell you about this stuff (ah, that work-for-hire agreement) and I'm sure there are no royalties either! If there are, I've not gotten any in a long, long while. It would be nice if they (at least) gave you a complimentary copy if you had any work in it.
I was able to find a mint, unused copy of it on eBay and got one for my own archives.
Thought I'd let you all know! IDW did some new comics with the Cartoon Network characters back then as well. I wish they'd (or someone) would do some new stuff again in 2025! Those old shows were great!

Here's more Ed, Edd n Eddy for ya! The boys were all drawn on cheap copy paper and inked with a Pitt Brush Marker. The inking style for the Eds might look like a sloppy, fast, loose style that is easy to create, when in fact, it is harder to do than one might think. It took me quite a few tries to get it down and these sketches are kinda how I warm up before I ink something officially for it. I have pencils sketches I have predrawn and before I ink, say a comic book story with the Eds, I ink four or five of these prelim sketches to get my hand, and more importantly, my head into the Eds' style.
