BABY YOGI and BABY SCOOBY!

I'm posting these as we talked about them on the Scooby Addicts podcast I did a week ago. Years ago, I was invite to participate in The Hanna-Barbera Gallery Project that WB Consumer Products did. At the time, Disney was doing baby versions of their characters (a popular trend most places tried with their characters) and so I said why not do that with my two favorite characters... 

Hence, Baby Yogi and Baby Scooby were created (at least, my version of them)! 

Drawn on cheap copy paper in pencil and then scanned and colored in Photoshop. You emailed high-res PDFs for them to print out and hang on the walls there if they liked them. I was told that Baby Yogi was a major hit and went over extremely well when I inquired how my art was received a couple weeks later.

Looking back, it was nice to be invited to partake, but there was no pay for doing it, and it was why I did it on cheap paper and did the work fast. The purpose of it was to possibly inspire WB Consumer Products to use any art submitted as a launching pad to make possible future products. Regardless, they should have paid us something...  

Overall, I'm still quite proud of this work and how they turned out! So I got that going for me... 

 

 

WARNER BROS CONSUMER PRODUCTS - Hanna-Barbera Concept Gallery Art

I think I posted these on my other places like FaceBook but never here where they should be. So here we go... Last September I was invited by Warner Bros Consumer Products to participate in "The World of Hanna-Barbera" Gallery, which was a selection of artists who were asked to come up with new takes or new styles based on the HB characters. You had to do at least one of these three: Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry or Yogi Bear. These were the licenses they were pushing for this year so they wanted some new ideas. After you did one of these, you could then do anything else from the HB catalog.

You could do them in any style or medium. They didn't have to be on model and they wanted you to express yourself. You could make a Scooby-Doo out of bottle caps or Atom Ant out of matches if you wanted. The main idea was that these might inspire some new products or style guide art that could be used at some point. Being that I always kind of look for something that might sell or something that I would buy if I saw it, I went to the young kiddie route and came up with Baby Yogi and Baby Scooby! I think they came out great and WB seemed to love Baby Yogi so who knows... I thought the baby line would be great for these characters since Disney has had such success with their Baby versions of Mickey and Winnie the Pooh.

For process junkies, these two were penciled and then scanned and just colored under the pencils to keep the clean rough look. It's a nice look for concept art.

Now L'il Scooby was actually the first thing I did and took the most time as I was thinking it would be cool for maybe a line of beginner reader books or something. I know he does seem like a Scrappy-Doo clone, but Scrappy is crappy and this is more of an ideal way to go. Even WBCP won't let you draw Scrappy for a job since they kind of disavow him. I never liked Scrappy's design either and thought Scooby "jumped the shark" when they started introducing Scooby's family in general. I had a young kid version of Shaggy to go with this as well. I wanted something cute and something that would appeal to women or mothers and that was what I aimed for.

YOGI BEAR!

Hey there, it's Yogi Bear! Here's a couple of pics I drew of the "smarter than the average bear" on copy paper. Yogi's always been one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera characters and I have quite a few plush dolls, toys, and board games and comics featuring him that I've collected over the years. Unfortunately, they don't do much new licensing with the character so it's kind of a shame there's no work available. They more or less use the art they did many years ago and just keep reprinting it since I think the corporate end feels that these characters aren't known to younger kids like the newer shows that are on Cartoon Network. How many kids have the Boomerang channel? The same goes for pretty much all the rest of the Hanna-Barbera line except for Scooby, which they always create new stuff for. Kind of a shame that Yogi, Atom Ant, Quick Draw McGraw, and the Flintstones have faded away since the writing for ALL these old properties was WAY BETTER than the shows that are on today.
